3 2022-23 NBA trade candidates who could use a fresh start elsewhere – Derrick Rose, New York Knicks
After appearing in just 26 games last season due to an injury, Derrick Rose has not played a major role for the New York Knicks this season. The point guard is playing a career-low 13.6 minutes per game this season, and his days in New York could be coming to an end. According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania (Subscription required), the Knicks have shown a willingness to include Rose in trade talks as they look to clear out a significant log jam in their guard rotation.
Although he may not be the player that he once was, Rose has carved out a role as a solid bench player over the past several seasons. Since the 2018-19 season, the former MVP has averaged a respectable 16.2 points, 4.6 assists, and 2.6 rebounds per game. The biggest concern with Rose is his health, as the guard has dealt with a string of injuries over the years. However, when he is on the floor, Rose could be the perfect piece some teams need to stabilize their second unit. With his scoring, ball-handling, and playmaking abilities, Rose could bulk up any bench.
Two teams that should look into trading for Rose are the Philadephia 76ers and Atlanta Hawks. Per NBA.com/stats, the Hawks are 27th in bench points and 29th in assists per game this year, while the 76ers rank last in both categories. Both teams could use a sparkplug off the bench on the offensive end, and Rose could be a worthwhile target. If given genuine minutes, Rose could strengthen the guard rotation for either squad and help them compete for a title this season.
Stay tuned to see if Rose or any of these other household names find themselves on new teams before the 2023 NBA trade deadline.
