All in the Family: Ranking the greatest NBA families
By Elaine Blum
7. The Rivers
This next family is still very much involved in the NBA and has certainly left a mark on the league, but they had to bow to the success stories of other families on this list. Philadelphia 76ers head coach Doc Rivers had a solid NBA career before he started coaching in 1999 and won Coach of the Year in 2000. Rivers was an All-Star in 1988 but never won a championship as a player. As a coach, he achieved that feat with the 2008 Celtics.
Doc Rivers was not the first member of his family to play professional basketball, though. He is the nephew of former NBA player Jim Brewer, who won a championship in 1982 and made the All-Defensive Second Team twice. While this is already quite the NBA season for the family, Doc’s sons carried on the basketball tradition.
His younger son, Austin Rivers, currently plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves, aiming to establish his spot on the roster and place in the league as he continues the Rivers’ NBA dynasty. The older Rivers’ brother, Jeremiah, played professionally in Serbia and the NBA Summer League.
Doc’s daughter, Callie, did not follow her father into the basketball world. Instead, she played collegiate volleyball, but she married Seth Curry, bringing another talented basketball player into the family.
