NBA Point God Candidate No. 1: Darius Garland, Cleveland Cavaliers
A year ago, we were still awaiting a breakout from Darius Garland. Then, he broke out so much that the Cleveland Cavaliers didn’t hesitate to part ways with Collin Sexton to acquire Donovan Mitchell from the Utah Jazz.
Last season, Garland averaged 21.7 points and 8.6 assists per game, both career highs for the guard. He also made his first All-Star Game and the Cavs rewarded the former fifth overall pick with a five-year, $231 million extension over the summer. This year, Garland has been besieged by a left eye injury suffered in the season opener, which has forced him to miss some time. But it shouldn’t prevent him from becoming the next point god, even if we need to take the “i” out of “point.”
Last season, Cleveland blew past expectations and Garland was a critical reason why, even as injuries piled up for the team. He was one of the top passers in the league and was putting up numbers reminiscent of Paul’s younger days.
Garland has all the on-court qualities of a point god. He’s able to drive to the hoop and finish strong. He’s also eager to toss up lobs and watch as one of Cleveland’s numerous star big men come down for the slam. Garland can also kick the ball out for a Kevin Love three. He has the attitude down, too. Teammates clearly enjoy following him on the court and trust him to command the offense. On a team with a lot of talent, Garland’s leadership qualities go a long way.
Garland’s biggest roadblock to point god status may be the young talent around him, which could obscure his individual contributions. Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen are all young and impressive in their own right. It could be hard for Garland to stand out.
But Garland still has a good case to be the next point god.
