Warriors: Jordan Poole’s extension was a no-brainer for Golden State — here’s why

3. Warriors have the best Sixth Man in the NBA in Jordan Poole

Many bookmakers have Poole as the current betting favorite to win Sixth Man of the Year award honors for the first time this season. For all of the talk that Poole can replace Curry, what about being the ideal replacement for Andre Iguodala for the duration of time that the roster looks the way that it does?

Iguodala was the most overqualified sixth man in the league for much of his time in Golden State, and somehow never won the award (despite being a Hall of Famer). Poole could enter that discussion quickly, and while there are other players in the league who also have a solid claim to be overqualified in this role, none are better suited to the Warriors than Poole.

It may be a bit rich for some people’s liking, but Poole is being paid the sum that he is in large part because of what he is able to bring to the Warriors right now. It is hard not to also talk about Wiggins at this point, and how paying both of them likely has real financial penalties for the franchise. It could also signal the end of Green as a Warrior, but that is a conversation for another time.

The organization has fronted up the money to remain in title contention for the foreseeable future, and paying Poole means that they believe he can step into Curry’s huge shoes, but also play his part on a championship-winning team this coming season. The sixth-man award generally goes to players off the bench who come in and put up a ton of points, and Poole fits that bill.

Tyler Herro of the Miami Heat won the award last season. Jordan Clarkson of the Utah Jazz the year before that. Poole is a similar type of player in terms of offensive ability, and if he is doing so on a Warriors group that pushes for the one seed, it will be hard to look past him. It cost a lot of money to get it done, but if you have a chance of elongating a dynasty, you pay the price.

The Warriors did just that, and now they will reap the rewards of keeping Jordan Poole.
