Ranking the 15 greatest point guards in NBA History — Next Players Up

A few active players made our Top 15 list, including a couple in Stephen Curry and Damian Lillard with a real chance at advancing up the list. Which active players could join them?

Kyrie Irving is the closest of any active player, but his inability to stay available for his team will make it hard for him to gain the volume or, likely, the postseason success he needs to make significant gains. The next group is the young up-and-comers, and it’s a stacked group.

Trae Young and Ja Morant are All-NBA players already. Young is a fearless shooter and wonderful passer, while Morant is a relentless attacker of the basket and dynamic scorer. Either could make this list if they improve a step and maintain their level of play.

Finally, there is a whole crop of young point guards ready to explode. Darius Garland and LaMelo Ball made the All-Star Game last season, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander certainly could have. Tyrese Haliburton was a revelation for the Indiana Pacers after joining them at the NBA Trade Deadline and could make a case to start knocking on this list by the end of his career.

There is no guarantee any of these guards will make a future Top 15 list, but they look poised to give it their best shot.
