NBA History: Ranking the 15 greatest point guards of all time
15 greatest point guards in NBA History — No. 7: Jason Kidd
We’re in the midst of our coaching run, as Isiah Thomas, Jason Kidd and (spoiler alert) Steve Nash have all served as professional head coaches, and John Stockton coached at lower levels. It’s a common path for NBA point guards to take as players who process the game at a high level tend to be drawn towards lead ball-handling roles.
That statement certainly applies to Kidd, who saw the court in such an inspired way that he was the league’s best passer for much of his career. HE rebounded extremely well for his size and was a ballshark on defense. Kidd not only led the league in assists five times, but he also made an All-Defensive Team a standout nine times.
Kidd began his career in Dallas and immediately began making his mark, winning Rookie of the Year and making his first All-Star appearance the following season. He would go on to lead high-powered offenses in Phoenix and New Jersey before returning to Dallas in the twilight of his career to start on a title-winning team. He also made his 10th and final All-Star team as a 36-year-old with the Mavs to go along with six All-NBA nods.
