2. Dwight Howard is a deadly lob threat with Chris Paul in Phoenix.

Sneakily, the Phoenix Suns don’t have much depth in a heated Western Conference. Despite being the best regular-season team in basketball a year ago, offseason turmoil and questions over the team’s morale have put the team back in flux. They weren’t very active during the offseason, and while it might be late in the game, Dwight Howard would offer legitimately important minutes backing up Deandre Ayton in the Valley of the Sun.

This ensures that the Suns have a physical lob threat on the floor at all times. Their other option at this juncture is Bismack Biyombo, who surprised the NBA with his impressive play when logging backup minutes and a few spot starts for Phoenix last season. However, it didn’t prove to be sustainable and he ultimately had a net rating of -3.7 points per 100 possessions with the Suns.

Picture Chris Paul throwing lobs to Dwight Howard — it’s a late-2000s dream come true. No, they’re not in their prime anymore, but these two future Hall of Famers pair together perfectly in limited minutes— even this deep into their respective careers. By channeling the core skills that make them each great, Phoenix would create an exciting new dynamic to surge itself forward.
