3. NBA 2K23 gave Hawks point guard Dejounte Murray an 86 steal rating.

Let’s get this straight: the player who led the NBA in total steals and steals per game ranks just 12th among all players in the steal attribute? This doesn’t make sense by any logic, though maybe NBA 2K23 needed to lower his steal rating to keep his overall (86) in line with other All-Star players. Nonetheless, there must be a better way to even out Dejounte Murray’s rating than giving him a lower steal rating than Saben Lee and Xavier Tillman.

Murray is a master pickpocket who pounces on the basketball with a long reach and catlike reflexes. Whether he’s intercepting a pass, picking a pocket, or outright ripping the ball out of someone else’s hands, no one steals the rock quite like Murray. That’s what makes this rating so perplexing — it’s widely known that this is his area of expertise.

The player with the top steal rating is Jose Alvarado, whose knack for poking the ball loose is nothing short of impressive. He averaged nearly two steals per game for the last 20 regular season games he played. But with such a small sample size, does he deserve a 98 steal rating and the top rank in the category over someone who’s been doing it for six years? That’s questionable.
