2. Willy Hernangomez led Spain to victory at EuroBasket.

With Ricky Rubio missing the tournament due to injury, Willy Hernangomez had to take on more responsibilities and had a breakout tournament for the Spanish national team. He led Spain all the way to their finals win, was voted a part of the All-Tournament team and was named the tournament MVP.

The New Orleans Pelicans center managed to elevate his game to a level that we have not quite yet seen him show in the NBA. In Spain’s Semifinals win over Germany, Hernangomez scored 16 points while shooting 71.4 percent from the field. He also did not miss a single one of his five free throws.

While Hernangomez was not Spain’s top scorer in the semifinals, he showed will and determination that fueled his teammates. He turned out to be the engine behind Spain’s offense and success, which also carried over to the finals. In the most important game of the tournament, not even Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert could stop him from scoring double digits once again.

Hernangomez certainly looks ready to take on a bigger role with the Pelicans next season and be more than just their third center option.
