NBA Player #2: Kevin Durant

As we all know, Kevin Durant has had a quiet, drama-free summer. Well, maybe not. Despite that drama, Durant, even at age 33, should have another strong season for the Brooklyn Nets. Durant averaged nearly 30 points per game last season, including scoring a career-high 55 points and should still be able to get buckets at will for the next couple of seasons.

That obviously narrows his window to break Chamberlain’s record, but he’s one of the greatest scorers ever and has yet to lose that touch.

Unlike the majority of today’s dominant perimeter scorers, Durant relies on 3-point shooting much less, without sacrificing efficiency. Just last season, he attempted 14.8 of his 20.3 shots per game from two and shot an incredible 56.8%. That could actually help his case, considering it can be difficult for a player to generate a significant number of threes, let alone knock down enough contested 25-footers to make a dent in Chamberlain’s record.

Meanwhile, Durant’s made a career out of using his length and size to shoot over defenders, particularly on pull-ups where it’s especially hard to effectively contest his shot. Therefore, it’s possible that he could get hot enough in one game to drill, say, 27 of his 40 shots from inside the arc, as well as hit at least 10 threes and connect on 15-plus free throw attempts.

As far-fetched as that might sound, Durant is the Nets’ number one option. Also, with Kyrie Irving likely to miss plenty of games, Durant, like Doncic, has the freedom to take as many shots as possible. That, plus at least a couple of overtimes, makes it plausible, albeit unlikely.
