Utah Jazz: 3 prospects from the 2023 NBA Draft worth tanking for
1. Center Victor Wembanyama, France
Victor Wembanyama is the big prize for whatever team winds up with the top pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. In the eyes of some, he’s the best prospect in basketball in a generation. The big man has been making waves in draft circles for years now. He’s far and away the best big man in the draft class and has scouts foaming at the mouth with his size and impressive skillset.
The first thing to note about Wembanyama is his enormous size. He’s 7-foot-4 and has an eight-foot wingspan. His frame is a bit skinny for his size (230 pounds), but that didn’t scare the Thunder away from drafting Holmgren this past year.
He’s more than just a giant, though. Wembanyama has the ability to do everything needed on the basketball court, from handling the ball to spacing the floor on the offensive end. Obviously, his length also makes him vicious on defense, able to alter shots on the inside but also hustle out to the perimeter to block shots there, too.
His combination of skill and size makes it nearly impossible to draw a comparison in the league. The comparison that will come up a lot is Kristaps Porzingis, but Wembanyama should be able to crash through the Latvian’s ceiling.
The superstar-to-be has largely been stashed away in France, so many NBA fans may not know his game and pedigree as well as some of the scouts plotting for Wembanyama to fall into their teams’ laps come the summer. That should soon change, though.
Metropolitans 92, Wembanyama’s Paris-based team, is set to play a couple of exhibitions in Nevada next month against Henderson and his G League Unite. It will probably be the best time for fans to see both players before they work on their games in quieter confines ahead of the NBA Draft.
It should also cement the Utah Jazz’s desire to tank for Victor Wembanyama above all in 2022-23.
