NBA Free Agency Grades: Charlotte Hornets

Signings: Cody Martin (4 years, $31.36 million)

Trades: None

The biggest moment in the Charlotte Hornets’ offseason came not from a free agent transaction, but from the arrest of restricted free agent Miles Bridges. Whether or not he plays again for the Hornets or in the NBA at all given the serious nature of his charges, the Hornets have to move forward without either re-signing their talented young forward or recouping value in a sign-and-trade deal.

They have otherwise been quiet in free agency, re-signing backup swingman Cody Martin to a solid four-year deal. They opted to keep Mason Plumlee at his full guaranteed salary, and he will be in a rotation with first-round pick Mark Williams at center.

The Hornets have decisions to make, from whether to seek another center on the trade market to decisions on P.J. Washington’s extension and Gordon Hayward’s trade market. They have a foundational piece in LaMelo Ball, but it’s unclear how they want to build around him, and which players on the roster will still be around a few years from now.

Taking the Bridges situation out of the equation, they made a fine signing in Martin but perhaps were too quiet otherwise in not adding on the margins. They will instead focus on developing recent draft picks into rotation roles.
