NBA Free Agency Grades: Utah Jazz

Signings: None

Trades: Rudy Gobert to Minnesota Timberwolves for Malik Beasley, Patrick Beverley, Leandro Bolmaro, Jarred Vanderbilt, Walker Kessler (22nd pick), four first-round picks, pick swap; Royce O’Neale to Brooklyn Nets for first-round picks

The Utah Jazz have not signed a single player to a full NBA contract in free agency, and yet they are going to receive an ‘A’ grade for the free agency period. How could that be? For bringing back one of the most spectacular trade hauls in NBA history.

The Jazz have been a really good team that couldn’t break through for the past half-decade with Rudy Gobert manning the middle, and the team decided it was time to build something new. They traded Gobet to the Timberwolves for an absolutely monstrous haul of picks and players, and are now actively shopping Donovan Mitchell to complete their rebuild.

Tanking in Utah is not an easy proposition, but exciting young talent is the most valuable commodity outside of a bona fide superstar. By trading their stars and veterans and effectively starting over, the Jazz can make a race to the bottom and perhaps rebound quickly.
