NBA Free Agency Grades: Phoenix Suns

Signings: Devin Booker (4 year, $214 million); DeAndre Ayton (4 years, $132.93 million); Bismack Biyombo (1 year, $2.9 million); Damion Lee (1 year, $2.13 million); Josh Okogie (1 year, $1.97 million)

Trades: Cash to Atlanta Hawks for Jock Landale

The Phoenix Suns have had a rather tumultuous offseason for a team that largely stayed the same. Their high-profile negotiation with DeAndre Ayton saw the young center sign a max-offer sheet with the Indiana Pacers that the Suns immediately matched. From a contract side it worked out well for the Suns – no incentives, trade kickers or player options – but whether or not it causes chemistry issues remains to be seen.

The other big-money move was to ink Devin Booker to a new extension, a four-year max deal to keep their centerpiece star in place. Booker, Ayton and Mikal Bridges are now all under contract through at least 2025-26, locking in the core of a contender.

The moves around the margins were fine. Bismack Biyombo resurrected his career last season, and Josh Okogie will hope to do the same as an athletic wing. Damion Lee is a movement shooter forged in the fire of Golden State and will add another element off the bench.

What didn’t happen was a Kevin Durant trade, which at one point seemed nearly inevitable after Durant put Phoenix on his two-team list. The Ayton contract likely means they are now out of the running, so for better or worse this is the team that will compete next season.
