3 ways Donte DiVincenzo can help the Golden State Warriors: Defense

Perhaps what could hurt the Warriors the most about Otto Porter Jr. and Gary Payton II leaving in free agency is the defensive versatility they provided. Both were incredibly valuable pieces during the title run due to the defense they provided, and replacing that will be difficult. However, adding a piece like Donte DiVincenzo should certainly help give them some immediate assistance.

Dating back to his college days at Villanova, DiVincenzo has been regarded as a strong defender. Throughout his four years in the NBA to this point, he has improved in that regard, having made a name for himself primarily due to his pesky defense.

Standing at 6’4, DiVincenzo can match up against opposing guards and make life difficult for them. Having a defensive-minded guard in DiVincenzo will help alleviate pressure off of players like Steph Curry and Jordan Poole when they share the floor, as the newcomer can take on those tougher assignments defensively. This will be a great addition in the playoffs, where players like Porter and Payton played rather similar roles.

Overall, the addition of Donte DiVincenzo is a solid one for the Golden State Warriors, especially as they inked him to a justifiable two-year deal worth $9.3 million. In due time, that contract could be a steal, as the Warriors may have found themselves a hidden gem just like they did last offseason when they struck gold by signing Payton and Porter.

Only time will tell, but DiVincenzo looks like he could be a sneaky good addition to the reigning NBA Champions. At 25 years old, the guard has plenty of room to grow, and Golden State may be the perfect place for him to develop.
