NBA Trades: 3 Utah Jazz trades to help Donovan Mitchell win: San Antonio Spurs

Jazz receive: Keldon Johnson, Jakob Poeltl, Josh Richardson

Spurs receive: Bojan Bogdanovic, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, 2023 1st-Round Pick, 2023 1st-Round Pick (via BKN, HOU, or PHI), 2026 1st-Round Pick (Top-10 Protected), 2025 2nd-Round Pick, 2029 2nd-Round Pick

At first glance, this trade seems extremely one-sided. However, it falls in line with what the San Antonio Spurs have indicated they are trying to do with the Dejounte Murray trade.

Their plan is to begin a full-on rebuild, acquire a ton of draft capital, and tank for the 2023 NBA Draft. This trade checks all of those boxes for them and then some.

Just like they did in the Murray trade, they would be getting back an aging veteran on a large contract in the final year of his deal (Bogdanovic) who they could buy out.

In addition, they could take a chance on Alexander-Walker, as he’ll be in the final year of his deal and the Jazz could let him go if it doesn’t work out. It’s nothing more than an upside swing.

But more importantly, they’d get two first-rounders in the 2023 draft, a first in 2025, and two second-round picks in the future. That’d put them right up there with the Thunder in terms of draft capital.

Meanwhile, the Jazz would be getting three quality rotation players. Jakob Poeltl could even be their new starting center since Gobert is now in Minnesota.

Keldon Johnson still has a ton of potential, and Utah could test him out as a secondary guy next to Mitchell. Meanwhile, Richardson is simply a 3&D wing to help them on the perimeter.
