NBA Trades: 3-team trade lands Kyrie Irving on LA Clippers: The trade
The framework of a possible deal with the Clippers could be as follows:
Clippers get: Kyrie Irving
Nets get: Norman Powell, Terrance Mann, 2028 1st-Round Pick (Top-4 Protected via LAC), 2023 1st-Round Pick (Lottery Protected via LAC)
Celtics get: Luke Kennard
In this scenario, the Nets would be acquiring a couple of solid players that are under contract and could help them compete for a couple of years, a nice draft pick, and most importantly, a $19 reduction off their checkbooks.
For a team like the Nets, who were deep into the tax, this financial relief is extremely valuable, and even more so since the team would not be competing for a championship. The Celtics would receive Kennard into their $17 million TPE, and it would address one of their biggest needs by adding one of the best shooters in the league. While the Clippers would be adding an elite, albeit troublesome, player to an already stacked squad.
Therefore, if Irving really wants to join the Lakers, as he is reported to be, he has to stave off other potential suitors. This probably won’t take much effort, as teams are probably wary of adding Irving to their squads due to his quirky and unpredictable behavior.
But to discourage possible suitors he may have willing to take a flyer on him, he must follow the Anthony Davis blueprint.
