4 roster moves the Minnesota Timberwolves need to make this offseason: 5. Trade D’Angelo Russell
D’Angelo Russell is a tremendous player who, since coming over from the Golden State Warriors has been a key piece for the Timberwolves. So, why is it that he needs to be traded? Would it not be better to keep him?
The answer to this is complex and multi-leveled, as most player transactions are in the NBA. With this becoming Edwards’ team, Russell is starting to see his role decrease as the Timberwolves grow. This is not a reflection on Russell at all, just a point of strength for Edwards.
Russell is also on an expiring deal, worth $31.3 million for the final year of this contract. This is of the right size where the Timberwolves would not have to give up much more to land a really solid piece of their puzzle. Currently, they are looking at a veteran center and this contract covers the salary of most big men in the league.
The Timberwolves are on the verge of creating something great, and they need to have the courage to use their assets to find the missing pieces. While Russell has been amazing since coming over, the Wolves need to strike while they can to complete the puzzle.
