3 best point guard options for the New York Knicks to pursue: Dejounte Murray

Although he’s the unlikeliest option of the three, Dejounte Murray could project as the most intriguing. In a career year at the Spurs, the 25-year-old became the first player in NBA history to average 20 points, eight rebounds, nine assists, and two steals per game.

Yet, despite the incredible season that saw him finish second behind Ja Morant in most improved voting, reports emerged last week that the Spurs were interested in moving on from their young, athletic point guard.

The Knicks have the draft capital to create an interesting package that could include the likes of Obi Toppin and/or Cam Reddish as well. Not only would Murray be the cheapest of the options from a salary standpoint (at least over the next two years), he’d probably be the best on-court fit as well.

Murray has shown the capacity to run an NBA offense, with his playmaking abilities likely to provide Barrett, Randle, and others with far easier scoring opportunities.

But it’s his defensive aspect that may actually prove most effective in a Thibodeau system that prioritizes that end of the floor. That’s one element that Brunson and Irving simply won’t bring, while Murray could project as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate.

While the inclusion of Murray would cost more from an asset perspective in a trade, he could foreseeably be the final solution to the Knicks’ problems, while also providing them with greater cap flexibility moving forward.
