3 best point guard options for the New York Knicks to pursue: Jalen Brunson

The Knicks-Brunson connection may be the most obvious one of all heading into this offseason. Brunson’s dad, Rick Brunson, was recently signed as an assistant coach to Tom Thibodeau’s staff, while the Walker trade on draft night opened further cap space to what’s being reported as a potential four-year $100 million offer to the Mavericks’ guard.

According to Marc Stein (subscription required):

"“Sources say that New York’s ability during Thursday night’s NBA Draft to offload Kemba Walker’s $9.2 million salary for next season, coupled with a growing belief that it can shed further salary to expand its offer when the marketplace officially opens next Thursday, has established the Knicks as a very credible threat to bring Brunson to Gotham. One source close to the process described that threat as “very, very, very real.”"

Brunson is the most likely option and, yes, he would address the Knicks’ point guard needs to a degree. At 25 years of age, he presents the right age profile to pair with Barrett and Randle moving forward.

The question mark is on Brunson’s ability to be a primary playmaker, given those responsibilities have fallen largely on Luka Doncic in Dallas. Can Brunson develop into ‘the guy’ who can run an NBA offense, or is he a second or third-string scoring option the likes of which the Knicks already have?

Regardless, one must wonder where a Brunson-Randle-Barrett trio could ultimately lead the Knicks, with the latter needing to develop into a top 10-15 player in the league for them to have any chance of sustained, deep playoff success.
