NBA Trades: 3 offseason trade ideas for the Boston Celtics: Charlotte Hornets

Boston Celtics receive: Kelly Oubre Jr.

Charlotte Hornets receive: 20241st-Round Pick (Top-20 Protected)

Kelly Oubre Jr.’s past stint with the Warriors may turn off potential suitors, especially after they just won the title after letting Oubre walk in free agency and just adding three veteran-minimum free agents to replace him.

Yet outside of Golden State, Oubre has been a productive player throughout his career. His only real downside is that his three-point shot is inconsistent, having shot just 34.5% this year, including a disappointing 35% on wide-open catch-and-shoot threes.

In spite of his shooting deficiencies, he is a very athletic wing that can also ball handle a little and create his own shot. He shot 53% on shots where he took over seven dribbles and 62% on shots that were 10 feet or closer, according to NBA.com tracking data.

While he may not address the Celtics’ shooting issues, he is a good finisher at the rim, which was also a weakness of this team. Adding his rim pressure capabilities could lead to wide-open three-pointers for Boston’s shooters.

On the other side of the court, he is very good at defending ball handlers and applying ball pressure. This could make an already elite defense even more dominant. Oubre is not the perfect fit, but the upside is intriguing enough to take a flyer on him.
