5 roster moves the Utah Jazz need to make this offseason: 5. Trade Rudy Gobert

Rudy Gobert has been a tremendous player for the Jazz since he was drafted by the franchise nine years ago. Thanks to being a European player, he was taken with the 27th pick in the 2013 NBA draft. To say that the Jazz got value for this pick would be an understatement.

Gobert is a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, has been named to the NBA’s All-Defensive team six times, and is a three-time All-Star. The Jazz rewarded him with a five-year, $205 million dollar extension which kicked in at the start of last season.

The problem with this is that the Jazz have more than half of their salary cap tied up in two players. While Gobert and Mitchell are two of the best in the NBA, they are not enough to take the team to the next level, which is where they need to go.

If the Jazz can convert Gobert’s massive deal into two or three players, this then gives them the ability to start moving for pieces that will move them even further forward. This is the biggest issue with the supermax – teams offer their players so much of the salary cap that they lose any and all flexibility.
