5 roster moves the Denver Nuggets need to make this offseason: 3. Re-sign DeMarcus Cousins
One of the moves that the Nuggets made throughout the 2021-22 NBA season was to sign DeMarcus Cousins. While Cousins is nowhere near the player he was before he injured his Achilles, he is still a very smart basketball player.
Cousins played 31 games for the Nuggets this season and had respectable averages of 8.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game. What makes these numbers even more impressive is that it only took him13.9 minutes per game to achieve this.
While he is nowhere near the player that Jokic is, he provides a good boost in short minutes off the bench. He is able to pick up the pace and feel of a game and play accordingly. This is a tremendous skill to have as a backup to the team’s star player.
Given that Cousins is over 30 and has bounced around the league since his ACL injury, if the Nuggets were to offer him just over a veteran’s minimum for two seasons it would be likely that Cousins would stay. This would help the Nuggets’ cap situation because unless they make more cap-shedding moves, they are going to be well into the luxury tax.
