Offseason roster moves the Cleveland Cavaliers need to make: 3. Pick up Darius Garland’s team option and extend him

The Cavaliers relied on the talents of Darius Garland when Sexton went down with his injury.  As a result, the third-year guard was named to his first All-Star team. He averaged 21.7 points, 8.6 assists, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.3 steals in 35.7 minutes per game.

Garland was tough to stop, especially when he was creating for others as well as himself. He has developed into a really high-quality player who was happy to put the team on his back for as long as was needed. This is a quality that a franchise looks for in a player.

The third-year man is still developing and this means that the Cavaliers will benefit from this for years to come. He is due $8.9 million for next season, which is an incredibly cheap price to pay for the level of production that Garland provides.

After next season, the Cavaliers have a reasonably open book when it comes to their salary cap thanks to Kevin Love’s contract expiring. This means that they should be able to offer Garland a deal very close to the maximum rookie extension, if not the maximum that they are allowed.
