Offseason roster moves the San Antonio Spurs need to make: 5.Pick up Keldon Johnson’s team option and extend him

Like so many of the younger players on the Spurs roster this season, Johnson took a giant leap forward and had a tremendous season. The third-year player averaged 17.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 0.8 steals in 31.9 minutes per game. These were all career highs.

Johnson was a crucial floor spacer for the Spurs, going at an impressive 39.8 percent from behind the three-point line on 5.3 attempts. This allowed Murray more space to create in, which was a big reason the Spurs made the play-in tournament this season.

Johnson is another Spurs success story of being taken late in the first round and becoming a success. He spent his first season bouncing between the G League and the varsity squad before solidifying his spot on the NBA roster in his sophomore season.

Johnson is only due $3.9 million next season as a team option. The Spurs front office would be wise to pick up that option and then offer Johnson an extension to the current deal as he is going to have a long, prosperous career in the NBA based on the past two seasons of production and growth.
