5 roster moves the San Antonio Spurs need to make this offseason
Offseason roster moves the San Antonio Spurs need to make: 3. Re-sign Lonnie Walker
Originally taken with the 18th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, Lonnie Walker spent most of his rookie season on the sidelines with injury. He would eventually play 17 games and not be a factor. This meant that his sophomore season was effectively where he developed.
His second and third season was where he started to show what he was truly capable of. He played 61 games in his second season and then 60 in his third. The Spurs did not offer him an extension on his rookie deal, meaning that he is a restricted free agent this summer.
His body held up really well last season, and Walker appeared in a career-high 70 games, coming off the bench in all but six of them. He averaged career-highs in points, assists, and steals. Walker became one of the Spurs’ bench leaders, and for a team to be successful, they need solid depth.
The Spurs only have to offer Walker $6.3 million as a qualifying offer, pricing the four-year veteran out of other contenders’ ability to sign the shooting guard. Walker has been in the Spurs system for four years and he is helping the team improve. He will hopefully take another step forward next season, helping the Spurs move up the standings even further.
