3 ways Luka Doncic humiliated the Phoenix Suns in Game 7: Defensive identity
Upon falling into an 0-2 series hole, Doncic drew heavy criticism for his lack of defensive effort. From the opening tip of Game 1, it was clear Phoenix’s intent was to target the Slovenian on defense. They did this with the aim of involving him in as much defensive action as possible in order to tire out the young star.
Though listed at a commanding 6’7 with a strong 230 lb frame to boot, Doncic has not always held up his end of the bargain defensively. Due to his immense duties on offense, it’s unrealistic to expect the 23-year-old to lock down his opponent possession after possession. However, at times the disappointing aspect for Doncic has been that, more often than not, it’s notable when he isn’t blown by on a dribble-drive attempt.
Hence why it was incredibly exciting to see Doncic key in defensively in a high-stakes, do-or-die game. The savvy point guard led the charge with a team-high three deflections, pickpocketing his opponents on a pair of occasions. But, the most encouraging part of his performance came in the form of defensive effort and positioning. The clip below exemplifies a small but crucial element of Doncic’s defensive success:

Doncic does a great job of staying attached to the hip of Chris Paul, not allowing the crafty vet to blow by for an easy floater. Staying with Paul allows Maxi Kleber just enough time to rotate and provide weakside rim protection.
Perhaps the most complimentary stat attributed to Doncic’s defense is that, in the final game of the series, he held the trio of Booker, Paul, and Bridges to 25% shooting from the field (3-of-12 FG), per NBA.com
As previously mentioned, the Mavericks’ Game 7 win required an inspiring group effort. However, the soul-crushing performance that Luka Doncic inflicted upon the helpless Suns will go down in history as one of the most shocking upsets in league history.
