5 goals for the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason: 3. Find a lead guard for the second unit

With Garland fully entrenched in the starting role, it’s time for the Cavaliers to work on finding someone who could spell him without too big a drop-off in play. This could be a priority for the team this offseason.

One option on the roster could be Sexton, but that seems unlikely, considering he’s a starter when he’s healthy. Besides, his future in Cleveland is questionable at best.

Ricky Rubio was the perfect option for this role, but his injury led him to be traded from the team. Rajon Rondo was okay after he was acquired, averaging 6.2 points and 4.9 assists per game, but his playing days may be behind him, and his days with the Cavs almost certainly are.

Caris LeVert, Garland, and Okoro are three of the four guards under contract for next season. The other is Dylan Windler, who hasn’t been able to prove he can be a regular in the rotation during his brief NBA tenure.

Bringing back Rubio seems like one intriguing option. He fit well with the Cavs and might be willing to take a discount considering his ACL injury, although Cleveland would likely want to make sure he’s healthy before signing him to any short-term deal.

A more affordable option would probably be someone like Delon Wright. He’s never put up big numbers, but he’s more than capable of spearheading a second-unit and bringing defensive intensity on the other end of the court.

Regardless of how Cleveland wants to proceed, they’ll likely want to free up some money, as the team is currently dealing with a deficit in cap space. That will necessitate some trades to free up value.
