NBA Trades: 3 Rudy Gobert trades for the Utah Jazz this offseason – Toronto Raptors

Toronto Raptors receive: Rudy Gobert, Royce O’Neale

Utah Jazz receives: Gary Trent Jr., Khem Birch, OG Anunoby

Why the Raptors do it: Toronto has been looking for an interior defensive presence for a while now. There is no one better at this than Rudy Gobert. The Raptors may be the only team in the league that has a surplus of wings. With the likes of Gary Trent, OG Anunoby, Pascal Siakam, and Scottie Barnes, it would make sense to trade some of this depth at the position to solidify their weaknesses. A starting five of Fred VanVleet, O’Neale, Barnes, Siakam, and Gobert would be a formidable force in the East, and a serious threat to win the conference.

Why the Jazz do it: Utah’s perimeter defense was atrocious this year. 3&D wings are the most sought-after commodity in the league, and Utah would be getting two quality wings. Adding OG and Trent to the fold would improve their perimeter defense significantly. They are also very good three-point shooters that would fit nicely in Utah’s offensive scheme. Trading Rudy will leave a significant hole in the middle of the defense, but big men are easier to replace in today’s game. Birch is not a world-beater, but he is a serviceable rotation big who could provide the team with quality minutes.
