NBA Trades: 3 Rudy Gobert trades for the Utah Jazz this offseason – San Antonio Spurs

San Antonio Spurs receive: Rudy Gobert

Utah Jazz receive: Josh Richardson, Jakob Poeltl, Doug McDermott, 2022 First-Round Pick (via BOS), 2024 First-Round Pick (Lottery Protected)

Why the Spurs do it: Ever since Kawhi asked for a trade, the Spurs have been tinkering with mediocrity. Even though they’ve had cap space the last couple of years, they have not been able to lure in a big name. As a small-market team, they will probably have a hard time bringing a star to San Antonio. Trading for a guy like Gobert is their best bet to add an All-Star caliber player to their core.

Why the Jazz do it: This may not seem like a lot for Gobert, but the Jazz would be acquiring some decent draft capital and decent role players. Josh Richardson has not been able to return to his Miami form, but he is still a serviceable wing. McDermott is an excellent shooter, a skill that is highly coveted around the league. Meanwhile, Poeltl is a very good rim protector that would make the loss of Rudy sting a little less on that side of the ball.
