The final verdict on the Brooklyn Nets potentially targeting Carmelo Anthony in 2022 NBA free agency

As there is with virtually every free agent, there are some pros and some cons with the idea of the Brooklyn Nets signing Carmelo Anthony. In reality, it would be an understandable move.

Sure, adding Anthony to this roster would not help the team’s defensive issues, and lineups with him alongside players like Seth Curry and Kyrie Irving could be problematic. However, he could help with Brooklyn’s lack of second unit scoring while improving their perimeter shooting.

Even with his defensive concerns factored into the equation, the 18-year veteran could be a feasible target for this Nets team as they look to bolster their second unit, especially if he is willing to accept a deal that is incredibly team-friendly.

Even if there is some interest in Anthony on Brooklyn’s end, he should not be their top free-agent priority. The Nets need to prioritize defensive-minded players that can help make them better on that side of the basketball immediately, and, as highlighted previously, that is not Anthony.

If he is available and they can come to terms on an agreement, great, but the Nets need to improve their defense first rather than add another scoring threat, as evidenced throughout their brief trip to the playoffs. Perhaps they can kill two birds with one stone by signing Anthony and adding a few savvy defenders off the free-agent market, but only time will tell on that front.
