Pros/cons of Brooklyn Nets targeting Carmelo Anthony in NBA free agency
By Dalton Sell
After a turbulent season full of injuries and controversy, the Brooklyn Nets will head into the NBA offseason with plenty of questions to address.
The biggest question marks revolve around a potential long-term extension for Kyrie Irving and head coach Steve Nash’s job security moving forward. Aside from those two significant unknowns, another looming question is what the Brooklyn Nets can do to come back with a vengeance next season.
They will undoubtedly look to retool the roster, and recent reports suggest that they may attempt to target a 10-time All-Star and six-time All NBA honoree in Carmelo Anthony during free agency to kick off that process.
The Brooklyn Nets could target Carmelo Anthony in 2022 NBA free agency
Anthony spent this past season with the Los Angeles Lakers, and while returning to LA is likely the most logical answer for the veteran, it is not set in stone. One anonymous general manager stated in a report from Heavy.com’s Sean Deveney that the Brooklyn native could look to return home in free agency, as there may be some mutual interest if Anthony leaves Los Angeles.
"“If he wants to go back to the area, the Nets stuff will pop up again,” the GM said. “He’d probably rather be there than back with the Knicks. He won a gold medal with Kevin Durant and Kyrie (Irving) and they wanted to sign him (in 2019) but the front office wanted more defense. Now, he’s kind of shown he can play a role as a 3-point shooter and they need to add more shooting because they’re worried about Joe Harris to start the season. If he leaves the Lakers, there will be interest on both sides with him and the Nets. He could win there.”"
The pairing here would certainly be an interesting one, but let us take a closer look at the pros, the cons, and a final verdict on whether the Nets should target Anthony once free agency begins.
