Offseason move for the Houston Rockets: 3. Guarantee Garrison Mathews

There is always going to be a place in the NBA for a player like Garrison Mathews. The 6’5″ shooting guard is a tremendous defender while not being a liability on the offensive end. When he is on the court, he sets the tone for the team defensively, putting his body on the line to take a charge or doing what he can to stay in front of his player.

While Mathews is listed as a shooting guard, his size and defensive ability allow him to play either wing position. This means that the Rockets can switch up their lineups in order to respond to their opposition or as a change-up to put the opposition off their rhythm.

This season, Mathews averaged 10.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 0.9 steals in 26.3 minutes per game. He is becoming a true 3&D type player, given that he took 5.9 of his 7.1 shot attempts from beyond the arc. He managed to hit 36.0 percent of them, which is respectable.

Matthews still has three seasons to run on his minimum, non-guaranteed deal, and next season is only worth $1.8 million. As the Rockets are rebuilding, to have a 3&D guy developing in your system at such a low price is incredibly valuable.
