3 players who raised their NBA Draft stock on Day 1 of March Madness: Doug Edert, St. Peter’s

ESPN Rank: N/R

Doug Edert is a 22-year-old junior who plays for St. Peter’s – the team that pulled off the biggest upset on the first day of March Madness. They took down the Kentucky Wildcats.

Kentucky was a two seed, while St. Peter’s was a 15 seed, marking only the tenth time this has happened since 1985. And while Daryl Banks III led the team in scoring, it was Edert who came in clutch when it mattered most.

Edert, a 6’2” guard, was once deemed “the best shooter in the country” by his coach. Obviously, there’s some bias in play there, but based on the performance he put up, maybe his coach isn’t too far off.

When the Peacocks (yes, that’s actually their name) needed a bucket the most, it was Edert who stepped up. He went 5-for-7 from the field, 2-for-2 from deep, and 8-for-8 from the three-point line.

And while nailing only two threes doesn’t seem like much, it was the way he got to his spots that was the most impressive. Edert’s off-ball movement was something that a lot of NBA scouts should be paying attention to.

Think about all the shooters the Miami Heat have found over the years just by giving them a chance and putting them in the right spots. Obviously, Edert’s height could get in the way of that, but there could still be some teams willing to give him a look.

Now, one performance alone won’t be enough to earn him serious NBA Draft consideration, but his performance on Thursday night definitely put his name on the map. Scouts will surely be keeping an eye on him from here on out.
