Losers of the NBA trade deadline: Washington Wizards
The Washington Wizards were a part of what was easily the most surprising trade of the week. They shipped off Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for Kristaps Porzingis. They also traded center Montrez Harrell to Charlotte. While Porzingis is a talented player (when healthy), I worry about what this trade means for the Wizards’ future.
Washington started off the year with a lot of success, and it seemed as though their offseason moves may have paid off. Sadly, however, the team quickly took a nosedive, and they now find themselves at 11th in the East, and out of the play-in tournament.
By dealing several of the new pieces they acquired this offseason, the Washington front office has seemingly conceded that this season has been a failure. With star shooting guard Bradley Beal’s pending free agency looming large, one has to wonder what that means for the future of the franchise.
Are Kristaps Porzingis and Kyle Kuzma enough to keep Bradley Beal in Washington? Only time will tell. But I can say with confidence that Wizards fans should be getting nervous.
