NBA Trades: What teams are interested in Dennis Schroder?

The Boston Celtics have some decisions to make as the NBA’s Feb. 10 trade deadline approaches. Some believe that with just a few tweaks to the roster that the Celtics can be a legitimate playoff contender this season; it’s not outrageous to think either.

As the deadline nears, reports show that multiple teams are interested in trading for Dennis Schroder. The veteran point guard has been quite consistent throughout his nine-year career, and has shown that he can have value on a championship-contending team.

It’s worth noting that Schroder fell into Boston’s lap at a steal of a price. So any valuable return they can get for him is a win on their initial $5.8 million investment for Schroder.

On a relatively cheap deal, Schroder has dragged the Celtics out of holes by providing points off the bench during times when nothing is going right for them. It might be challenging to part ways with a player like that who has provided multiple roles this season.

Due to his productive season, Schroder has become a hot commodity around the league. His 14.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game this season have seen him draw interest from the Chicago Bulls and the Milwaukee Bucks- two teams slated for a deep playoff run.

It’s reported that the Bulls have created a package that revolves around Troy Brown Jr., however, the Celtics are interested in Coby White, a point guard who can fill a position of need for Boston almost immediately. Although White has dealt with injuries of his own, the acquisition of Lonzo Ball set him back a bit.

On the other hand, it’s hard to determine who the Bucks would offer in a trade. The only name that comes to mind would be Donte DiVincenzo, and since he’s only played in 15 games this season, it would make sense for the Celtics to pass on a trade with Milwaukee if it’s DiVincenzo that’s being offered.

The rules of supply and demand are really coming into their own in this NBA season, and the demand for veteran point guards towers over the actual supply of them.

The thing with Schroder is that he does hold value in Boston. He’s a consistent veteran presence who knows his role and accepts it. He can also control the floor tempo at times and it’s become valuable for the Celtics in a handful of games this season.

If the Boston Celtics get this done properly, they could potentially walk away from Schroder with a player that could push them into an actual playoff spot in an ever so tight Eastern Conference.

It all depends on how the Celtics front office views themselves this season – are they a playoff team or not? If so, then expect Boston to be sellers at the deadline, if not, then expect the Celtics not to do much of anything else by the deadline.

With three days left and a handful of interest in Schroder, it’s hard to think the Boston Celtics will pass on an offer. Especially if they don’t believe he’s in their long-term plans come next season.
