NBA: The worst player from each franchise to have their jersey retired
Each franchise worst player to have their jersey retired, Washington Wizards: Phil Chenier
Stats: 17.2 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 3.1 apg
Phil Chenier was pretty smooth with the rock in his hands. He constantly broke down defenders before making his way to the hoop to lay the ball in. During his time as a Wizard, he was a three-time All-Star and gave defenders hell in the playoffs, routinely averaging over 20 points per game.
Throughout the 70s and 80s, he was a difficult cover for just about everyone. So while we did our best to pump him up, unfortunately, we have to somewhat tear him down.
For as great as Chenier was, he wasn’t Hall of Fame material, unlike the other names who have their jerseys hanging in the rafters at the Wizards arena. Wes Unseld, Gus Johnson, Elvin Hayes, and Earl Monroe were all iconic figures for the franchise and at some point, they were considered near the top of the NBA food chain. Chenier was a great player with a terrific all-around game but he simply couldn’t compete with those previously mentioned names.
