NBA: The worst player from each franchise to have their jersey retired
Each franchise worst player to have their jersey retired, San Antonio Spurs: Avery Johnson
Stats: 10.1 ppg, 6.9 apg, 1.1 spg
Over the years, the San Antonio Spurs have rightfully gained the reputation as being one of the best and most hallowed franchises ever.
While players such as Manu Ginobili, Tim Duncan, George Gervin, and David Robinson all earned the right to have the jerseys hanging in the rafters, there are a few puzzling names amongst them.
Bruce Bowen spent eight seasons with the San Antonio franchise but only averaged 6.4 points per game. While we thought long and hard about considering him the worst player to have his jersey retired by the Spurs, we couldn’t pull the trigger. Mostly because he did make five All-NBA Defensive teams.
Undoubtedly, the worst player to have his jersey in the Spurs rafters is Avery Johnson. The diminutive guard averaged just 10.1 points per game. He was never creative at getting his own but he was one helluva defender. Still, he should be considered the worst player to have his jersey retired in Spurs history.
