NBA: The worst player from each franchise to have their jersey retired
Each franchise worst player to have their jersey retired, New York Knicks: Dick McGuire
Stats: 8 ppg, 5.6 apg, 4.2 rpg
It’s time for us to knock down a few conceptions about Dick McGuire. Although the former Knicks point guard walks the streets of New York and routinely receives a hero’s welcome, he is the worst player in franchise history to have their jersey retired.
It’s a bit difficult to throw McGuire under the bus but as we look at his statistical numbers, he was widely overrated. In eight seasons, McGuire averaged eight points and 5.7 assists. To make matters worse, he shot only 38% from the field. Yet, despite the pedestrian numbers, McGuire was a five-time All-Star and Hall of Famer.
There were no distinguishing qualities about McGuire. He wasn’t a terrific passer, wasn’t an efficient scorer, and wasn’t stout on the defensive end. So, while Dick Barnett and Bill Bradley, are on the lower end of the totem pole in terms of players who have their jerseys retired by the franchise, McGuire was far and away the worst of the bunch.
