The Chicago Bulls NEED to get the one seed in the East: Elevate expectations
Chicago Bulls head coach, Billy Donovan, is used to high expectations. While he was the coach of the Florida Gators in the college ranks, Donovan led his team to multiple Final Four appearances and back-to-back National Championships.
In order to do this, he became a master recruiter who instilled confidence in his program and raised the bar higher than ever. It is from this environment, where winning was the expectation, that Donovan emerged to become an NBA head coach.
If the Bulls can manage to end the regular season with the best record in the Eastern Conference, it would change the trajectory of the team for years to come. This dynamic can be seen when taking a glance at one of Chicago’s rivals, the Milwaukee Bucks.
In 2019 and 2020, the Bucks ended the regular season with the best record in the league. Prior to those seasons, the team was considered up-and-coming, but not a true contender.
Those virtuoso regular seasons elevated the team’s expectations and gave them a “win now” mentality. The end result was an NBA championship in 2021.
While making those types of predictions for Chicago would be unfair and premature, the comparison is not without merit. When winning becomes a habit, anything less becomes unacceptable.
Thus far, the Chicago Bulls have been a pleasant surprise in the race for Eastern Conference supremacy. However, it is time for the team and their fans to realize that the chemistry and continuity they have on the court is not a fluke.
The Bulls are legitimately one of the best teams the conference has to offer; they are not just a “tough out.” If the team really wants to see how far they can go in the playoffs, they must make an intentional push for the number one seed.
If they are able to achieve this there’s n telling how high they can fly. The sky’s the limit.
