2021 second-round NBA rookies that already look like steals: Herb Jones

A contributor right off the bat, Herb Jones started and played 29 minutes in the second game of his career. Thanks to a mix of his strong play and the Pelicans’ litany of injuries, he’s continued to be high in the rotation.

At the time of writing, the 35th overall pick is averaging 26.1 minutes. Only one other second-round rookie (the aforementioned Jeremiah Robinson-Earl) is logging more than 16 per game.

The 6-foot-8 center has had some true highlights that would lead you to believe he can be a long-term piece for first-year head coach Willie Green. Against the Grizzlies on November 13th, he scored 17 points off the bench, and vs. Washington on November 24th, he nabbed four steals.

His impressive play dates back to Summer League, where he helped guide the young Pelicans to a perfect 5-0 record in Las Vegas.

Turning 23 two weeks before the season tipped off, he’s also one of the oldest first-year players in the league, which has likely helped him adjust to the pro game. Zion Williamson’s return looms, but Jones has shown he belongs in the rotation with efficient scoring and versatile defense.
