NBA: The 25 least deserving Hall of Famers of all-time: 7. Maurice Cheeks

Stats: 11.1 ppg, 6.7 apg

Maurice Cheeks is universally respected and loved. But, in our opinion, a ton of the praise and adulation he’s received has come as a direct result of Cheeks time as both an assistant and head coach in the league.

What else could be the reason? As we take a peek into his actual playing career, that’s the only thing that makes sense.

During the most crucial stretch of his career, Cheeks was a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He did venture off with the San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, New Jersey Nets, and the Atlanta Hawks but by the time he joined those franchises, he was very much out of his prime.

With Philly, Cheeks was a four-time All-Star and former NBA champ but there was nothing dominant about his game. His career-high in points per game? 15.6. How about assists? 9.2.

Cheeks did make his mark on the defensive side of the ball, racking up five All-Defensive selections but does that make him Hall of Fame material? It did but we don’t agree.
