NBA: The 25 least deserving Hall of Famers of all-time: 11. Ralph Sampson

Stats: 15.4 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 1.6 bpg

Number one overall picks can be a bit hit or miss at times but for the most part, they tend to have a ton of success in the league. Ralph Sampson, the number one pick in the 1983 NBA Draft, took a look at the landscape and laughed at himself as he went on to dominate.

In back-to-back seasons, Sampson averaged at least 21 points and over 10 boards. He also blocked at least two shots per game during that stretch.

Eventually, his production began falling further and further down the deep end. Even though he was solid, outside of his first two seasons, Sampson never scored more than 20 points per game.

In the late 1980s, Sampson’s body began falling apart. With knee and back injuries becoming a consistent problem, Sampson was a complete shell of himself in the final few years of his career. He averaged less than 10 points and five boards for three straight seasons.

Sampson never won an NBA title and had only one deep playoff run. He may have been on a Hall of Fame trajectory in his first few seasons but once his body fell apart, he was simply an awful player. There’s really no reason why he should hold a place in the Hall of Fame.
