NBA: The 25 least deserving Hall of Famers of all-time: 14. Adrian Dantley

Stats: 24.3 ppg, 5.7 rpg, 3 apg

We have to get away from this notion that just because you scored a ton of points during your NBA career, that makes you some sort of great player. It does not.

Even as a 21-year-old rookie, Adrian Dantley was one of the best scorers in the league, dropping a cool 20.3 points per game before he even knew what he was doing. From there, Dantley continued to light it up. On four separate occasions, he scored over 30 points per game. And, during two of those seasons, he led the entire NBA.

Now, of course, scoring is important in the league. In fact, we aren’t against guys who focused all of their efforts on that side of the ball making the Hall. The problem with Dantley is that despite his scoring binges, his teams often stunk up the joint. During that four-year stretch in which he averaged over 30 points a game, only once did his team make the playoffs.

With just six All-Star appearances and two All-NBA selections, it appears as though voters weren’t exactly impressed with his scoring either.

The nail in Dantley’s Hall of Fame coffin came when he was traded from the Detroit Pistons. Despite being arguably their best player, the franchise immediately went on to win back-to-back titles without him, proving that his scoring was basically empty-calorie stats.
