NBA: The 25 least deserving Hall of Famers of all-time: 16. Arvydas Sabonis

Stats: 12 ppg, 7.3 apg, 2.1 apg

No, no, no. Again, no.

Arvydas Sabonis doesn’t get to make the Hall of Fame after making NBA fans wait years upon years for his arrival.

The supremely skilled big man played almost ten additional years overseas before deciding to enter the league in 1995 at the age of 31. While that isn’t considered ancient, it is for a player who’s just starting their NBA career.

By the time Sabonis landed with the Portland Trail Blazers, he was broken down physically due to a long list of injuries. He did manage to make the All-Rookie team in his first year but that’s about as far as his list of accolades gets.

Sabonis finished his career with averages of just 12 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists.

He didn’t get a single MVP vote, didn’t win an NBA title, didn’t make an All-Star squad, or an All-NBA team either. If Sabonis simply made his arrival stateside several years ahead of time, chances are, he would’ve dominated.

That said, he didn’t. And while many continue to fantasize about the player he could’ve been had he arrived sooner, in the end, he never made that leap. We refuse to reward him based on hypotheticals.
