Before they beat the Celtics the other night, the San Antonio Spurs had lost six straight games. One win doesn’t take away from the terrible season they have been having.
In fairness, despite being the almighty Spurs, this team doesn’t really have the talent to compete in the West right now. They have a ton of promising young players, but none are established yet.
Dejounte Murray is getting there, though. He’s been putting up great numbers, which is exactly what the Spurs are looking for from him this season.
Outside of Keldon Johnson’s monster dunk against the C’s, there hasn’t really been much excitement around this team this season, which is unfortunate considering this is probably one of Gregg Popovich’s last seasons in the NBA.
Season outlook: Regardless of Popovich’s retirement plans, this was always going to be a rebuilding year for the Spurs. As soon as DeMar DeRozan left, it signaled the start of a rebuild for San Antonio. Barring any late-season Popovich heroics, expect to see them in the top ten of this upcoming draft.
