NBA Rumors: Mike Brown, Kenny Atkinson up for Kings HC job
By Jack Simone
The Sacramento Kings recently fired now-former head coach Luke Walton. After two and a half years with the team, the organization finally decided to move on.
Despite their recent two-game win streak, including a triple-overtime win over the Lakers, the Kings have had a very disappointing season so far. They currently sit at 8-12, good for 11th in the Western Conference.
They named assistant coach Alvin Gentry as their interim head coach for the time being. Gentry was hoping they would name him as the full-time Kings head coach, but unfortunately, they are still searching for a new leader.
NBA Rumors: Mike Brown, Kenny Atkinson up for Kings HC job
Recent NBA rumors revealed that two names sit towards the top of that list – Golden State Warriors assistant coaches Kenny Atkinson and Mike Brown.
Atkinson garnered a ton of respect when he helped the Brooklyn Nets reach the playoffs after being the worst team in the league for years. The Nets replaced him with Steve Nash once Kevin Durant got healthy and returned to the team.
Since then, he has been an assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Warriors. Before Brooklyn, Atkinson was an assistant coach for both the New York Knicks and the Atlanta Hawks.
Meanwhile, Brown’s only head coaching position was with the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2005 to 2010. The team reached the playoffs every season and even reached the NBA Finals once.
LeBron James was a huge part of that, but he was super young at the time. In addition, Brown has been an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards, San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers, and Warriors.
On top of that, Brown was the head coach of Team Nigeria at the Olympics this past summer. His team upset Team USA in an exhibition game, and it was the talk of the summer.
Either coach would be a solid fit with the Sacramento Kings, and all they have left to do now is make a decision. Who would you most like to see? One of the coaches named in NBA rumors, or someone else not named?
