NBA Trades: The final verdict on this proposed trade between the Brooklyn Nets and Dallas Mavericks

Although the deal makes some sense for both sides, there are several factors that could stop it from happening. First off, NBA Insider Marc Stein previously reported that Irving could outright retire if the Nets were to suddenly trade him elsewhere (subscription required). Although there are some mixed reportings on that notion, it could be enough to scare Dallas away, and no one could really blame them for being cautious.

Another big question is whether the Nets are willing to move Kyrie Irving. While it would make sense to do so because he is not playing for them, his relationship with Durant might prevent a deal.

Durant and Irving both signed with the Nets in the summer of 2019 because they wanted to join forces, and a deal to move Irving could displease the star. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith recently noted that Durant nixed a potential trade that would have sent Irving to the Philadelphia 76ers for Ben Simmons. He would certainly do the same for this deal with the Mavericks, in all likelihood.

It seems like any deal between the two sides is too far-fetched. While it would be fun, both teams will likely stand pat and ride it out with their current rosters for now.

The Mavericks seemingly believe they can compete with this group, and the Nets are holding out hope that Irving will eventually get vaccinated and rejoin them. Only time will tell.
