Ranking all 30 NBA jerseys: 8. San Antonio Spurs

Confession: I wanted to put the San Antonio Spurs at number one on this list purely due to the spur they use as the ‘U’ in Spurs. I love everything about it. Replacing a letter with the team’s logo is excellent, it’s iconic and decidedly theirs.

The fact that it goes so perfectly with a city in Texas that is known for the Alamo and its rodeo is the marriage of location and team name that most other teams simply ignore or do poorly (ranking the team names should be our next project!).

Unfortunately, the Spurs don’t have much pizzazz to otherwise elevate their jerseys higher than number eight. Their black-and-white look is fine but unexciting. Their Statement jersey does something similar to the Utah Jazz with their logo by itself on a single-color jersey, but the gray works better for the Spurs than the all-yellow did for the Jazz.

The Spurs also get a bump from the history of winning five titles in essentially these same jerseys. They don’t get credit from their great Fiesta jerseys, but having an occasional pop of color during the year is a good contrast to their standard black-and-white look.

Wife Take: That’s a Spur? Like what goes on a boot? I like the concept, but in reality, it looks weird. I’ve never seen an entire spur off the boot, just the sharp part at the end, so it seems wrong to look at.
