Detroit Pistons players most likely to get traded by the deadline: Hamidou Diallo

Prior to the season, Hamidou Diallo felt like one of the most noted members of the Detroit Pistons young core. The team traded for him at the deadline, highlighting his connection to Weaver’s time with the Oklahoma City Thunder, and coinciding with his drafting of Diallo.

The team was able to re-sign him in restricted free agency on a two-year deal, with the second season being a team option. However, only a few weeks into the season, Diallo finds himself struggling for minutes.

So far Diallo has received DNP-CDs in four of the Pistons 10 games, including the last three. He has logged 77 total minutes this season and is averaging 4.3 points and 1.8 rebounds, both career lows. Currently, even Rodney McGruder is receiving more of an opportunity than the 23-year-old wing.

Some of this is due to the glut of wings on the roster, giving coach Dwane Casey too many players to use in a limited number of rotation minutes. For Diallo to get the increased opportunity, he has to prove that he is more deserving than players like Josh Jackson (more on him later) or Frank Jackson, for example.

He showed signs a season ago of an improved three-point shot and was the most athletic slasher on the team. It feels too early to give up on his talent, but being in the doghouse (no matter what Casey says) could portend a move.
